‘the radiance of a thousand suns…I am become as death, the destroyer of worlds.’

Of the 245,000 people in the city, about 100,000 died that day, about 100,000 subsequently. Some died without visible injury or cause. Others were covered with bright, multi-colours spots. Many vomited blood. One man put his burned hand in water and ‘something strange and blueish came out of it, like smoke. Another, almost blind, regained perfect sight. But his hair fell out.

As insignificant as an autograph

In truth, we return to the end of the world.

The three men, otherwise nothing in common, retail themselves (variously bemused, dismembered, entangled) against the beautiful icon’s ‘vacant superior surface.’

And how the shape of the universe becomes her!

‘So that Insignificance will have taken in…a distress signal…a planned overthrown of names…a stroke of fate…one night in Manhattan (a bit of The Dream

left over)…a vanishing act…a roll of the dice…a repeat performance…a love story…and entire history…the change of the world…a chance for the world…the ‘pristine world of theory’…and so on…and the rest…plus one…TO BURN WITH CURIOUSITY…

And so we might say coming out of Insignificance, we were only on our way to this exit after all, an end which refuses the end.

ZCIQ 4 (the cassette): part of number fourteen in a vanishing Action Series.
